The German midfielder is yet to agree a contract extension as talks continue to stall, and losing such a player would be a very huge blow to Arsenal.
Mesut Özil remains one of the north London club’s best players, and has been influential in every of their campaign since arriving from Real Madrid in 2013. The 28-year-old has made 100 Premier League appearances for Arsenal thus far, with 20 goals to his name.
With his current contract set to expire next summer, Arsenal are hoping to tie him down for much longer as soon as possible. Ozil has claimed Wenger’s future will determine if he signs a new deal, and the French tactician is seeing out his last year on his most recent deal.
He is yet to also decide if to walk away, and has hinted the campaign will decide if he remains or leaves. The latter is very likely, and Ozil would definitely follow suit.
Another factor that could make the World Cup winner stay is Jack Wilshere. The England international wears Jersey number 10 for Arsenal, and it’s the number Ozil has always coveted, having worn it at Madrid.
Wilshere’s future at Arsenal isn’t guaranteed, with many clubs hoping to get him once his loan at Bournemouth ends, and competition for places high at the Emirates. Ozil recently claimed,
“Since Wilshere’s departure last summer, the number is free, but I have yet to get it”
And he said this at the beginning of the season,
“[The No.10] has become free and I definitely want it.”
The Jersey number and Wenger’s future must be sorted if Ozil is to remain at the Emirates.
Simple as that!
