Valverde admits Barcelona could sign Chelsea forward this winter

On the eve of Barcelona’s clash with Eibar, Ernesto Valverde has announced club’s desire to sign a new striker by the end of the January transfer market.

The Catalans have reached an agreement with Sevilla over the transfer of Munir El Haddadi to the ranks of the Andalusians.

By offloading the 23-year-old forward, the reigning La Liga champions have opened the way for a new attacker.

With Luis Suarez remaining the only reliable option for the centre-forward role, Valverde hopes he can bolster his offensive department ahead of the second-half of the season.

“We have to look at it, it’s clear that after Munir’s departure we have space.”

“We’ll see if we can sign a player, although we have to take into account the club’s economic conditions. We will see if we can, if someone comes.”

Asked about the out-of-form Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata, the ex-Athletic Bilbao coach said: “I can only say the same thing. That he’s a great player, that he’s at another team and that we respect that a lot.”

Morata has been on Barca’s monitor over the past few days, according to numerous reports from England and Spain.

The 26-year-old Spaniard has been struggling for form and regular playing time under Maurizio Sarri this season and is poised to leave Stamford Bridge this winter.

Morata has recently scored a brace in Chelsea’ 2-0 win over Nottingham Forrest in the FA Cup but has embarrassed himself wasting a massive opportunity.

It was another sign the player is dealing with self-confidence issues caused by a lack of regular first-team action.

Kicked out from the starting eleven in favor of Willian and Pedro, he has started just one of Chelsea’s last seven Premier League outings.

Although some previous talks suggested the Blues could swap Morata for AC Milan’s Gonzalo Higuain, the former Real Madrid star seems desperate to return to his homeland.
