Napoli manager Carlo Ancelotti has revealed he laughed with his Liverpool counterpart Jurgen Klopp after their Champions League clash on Tuesday evening
A late drama at the Stadio San Paolo saw the home side secure a 2-0 win thanks to Dries Mertens’ penalty and Fernando Llorente’s cool finish.
It was Napoli’s second successive home win over the Reds in the Champions League group stage, but in spite of their triumph over the reigning champions, they’ve still struggled to advance to the knockout phase last season.
In the post-match interview, Ancelotti has hailed his team’s performance and revealed what he told Jurgen Klopp after the showdown.
“I want to see a team that believes in itself and its quality,” he said. “I really liked the way we played when we weren’t in control.”
“Llorente helped out. The players were tired, and the first goal was from a long ball, which isn’t our usual approach, but it’s not an insult to do that sometimes. This team must know how to do everything.
“We brought in important players who improve the quality level of the squad and have different characteristics to what we had before. I have to keep them motivated, and that’s not easy, especially when UEFA still have this rule forcing you to keep a short bench, and it’s painful sending players to the stands.”
While Klopp now tasted defeat in all five of his previous trips to Italy, the Partenopei have confirmed they are comfortable facing the Premier League sides at home, making it five from six against the English clubs at this venue in the Champions League.
