Arsenal’s hopes of signing Thomas Partey have dealt a massive blow, as Atletico Madrid look to offer the midfielder as part of the deal to sign Liverpool’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has identified Partey as his primary midfield target for the upcoming transfer window, as he hopes to reshape his squad ahead of the new season.
However, the Ghana international’s contract includes a £45million release clause that the Gunners are highly unlikely to be able to meet following the financial collapse caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Although the 26-year-old’s contract at the Wanda Metropolitano expires in 2023, Atletico Madrid could offload him in the summer, as they aim to bring in the Liverpool star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
As reported by the talkSPORT, the La Liga giants are planning to include Partey in the arrangement to sign the versatile English midfielder, who has only recently recovered from a long-term injury.
Oxlade-Chamberlain arrived at Anfield from Arsenal in 2017 and has gone on to register 78 appearances for the Merseyside outfit, including 34 in all competitions this season.
But, a nasty injury that kept him out of action for the entire 2018/19 has seen the 26-year-old lose his place in Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI and could be on his way out when the transfer window reopens.
Diego Simeone’s side struggled to keep pace with Barcelona and Real Madrid this term before the pandemic gripped football, and the Argentinean manager is hopeful to be able to strengthen his roster ahead of the new season.
Atletico trailed fourth-placed Real Sociedad by a point before the campaign was halted, and Los Colchoneros could face an uphill task of securing Champions League football when the league restarts.
Heavily dependent on the Champions League as a prime income streak, the Madrid heavyweights desperately need to return to the top-four to accumulate funds for the summer transfer window.
