AC Milan playmaker Hakan Calhanoglu has made a decision on his future amid speculations over his potential move to the Premier League.
Calhanoglu has been one of the brightest spots during Milan’s resurgence under Stefano Pioli. The 27-year-old attacking-midfielder endured a torrid start to his San Siro career following his €24million arrival from Bayer Leverkusen in summer 2017. Hakan joined the Rossoneri with a mark of being one of the best set-piece takers in Europe and one of the most creative players in Europe’s top-five leagues. However, a period of adaptation for Calhanoglu lasted for almost two years, leading to rumors about Milan’s decision to sever ties with him.
Calhanoglu’s potential has burst into life following the arrivals of Pioli and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. His return to form has also coincided with Milan’s inexorable march towards the top of Italian football. Since the resumption of football in the post-lockdown period, the Turkey international has scored seven goals and provided 17 assists in 30 Serie A appearances, establishing himself as an indispensable first-team member. Without any doubt, Calhanoglu is one of Milan’s most essential parts at the moment.
However, the former Hamburger SV star has entered the final six months of his contract in Lombardy. Milan have been mounting pressure on Calhanoglu to commit his long-term future to the red-black colors, which has come to no avail so far. The player is determined to ensure a significant pay raise before putting pen to paper on a new deal. In fact, he asks for a whopping €6.5m-per-a-year contract to extend his stay at the San Siro, while the Rossoneri are reluctant to go beyond €4m.
Talks have hit a stalemate, but there’s a genuine sense that a breakthrough will arrive in the foreseeable future. Adding to this sentiment, Manchester United and Chelsea will both end empty-handed, as their pursuit of the Milan standout performer suffers a massive blow, as reported by Milan Report. Calhanoglu has reportedly ruled out the possibility of swapping Serie A for the English Premier League despite United’s efforts to lure him to Old Trafford. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s recruitment team was in advanced talks with the player’s entourage not long ago but will have to find an alternative as things stand right now.
