Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has backed Edinson Cavani to shine in the red jersey this season
Cavani joined Manchester United as a deadline-day signing after seeing out his contract at Paris Saint-Germain earlier in the summer.
The Uruguayan frontman has yet to make a Premier League start this season after staying in quarantine for 14 days following his arrival from France.
However, 55 minutes of top-flight action were enough for the 33-year-old to open his scoring account for the Red Devils.
Cavani is the type of player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was crying out for last season. One of the most prolific No 9’s in the past decade, he has been backed by many to replicate Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s success at Old Trafford.
Ibra also moved to Manchester United from PSG as a free-agent back in the summer of 2016 and quickly became indispensable for Jose Mourinho’s side at that time.
Despite his age, Cavani is still one of the most lethal forwards in Europe’s top-five leagues and could be a difference-maker for United, according to Berbatov.
The ex-Bulgaria international is hopeful that Solskjaer will play Cavani more often, insisting the latter has plenty to offer despite his age.
“Edinson Cavani was sent off for a rash challenge while playing for Uruguay against Brazil in midweek. I don’t think this necessarily shows there’s a fire in the forward,” Berbatov wrote in a column for Betfair.
“We already knew he had plenty of passion, otherwise he wouldn’t have such a fantastic goal-scoring record.
“I want the big Uruguayan to score more for United, after getting his first against Everton a couple of weeks ago. But to do that, he needs to play more minutes.
“I want to see Cavani play down the middle. With Anthony Martial on the left and Marcus Rashford to the right. When he has come on, Cavani has looked sharp so far for United and made some excellent runs.
“At 33, he’s in great shape, and, with young guys around him, he could be lethal for United.
“Saturday’s home match against struggling West Brom would be a perfect opportunity for Solskjaer to play Cavani in the center of the United attack.”
