Edinson Cavani has reflected on signing a season-long contract extension with Manchester United amid a notable upturn in form.
Cavani arrived at Old Trafford last summer as a deadline-day signing, putting pen to paper on a year-long contract with an option to extend for another season.
Although the 34-year-old’s arrival saw some eyebrows raised due to the striker’s age and his underwhelming final season at Paris Saint-Germain, the Uruguay international has silenced the critics.
Following a rough adaptation period interrupted by several physical setbacks, PSG’s all-time top scorer has gone from strength to strength at United.
The veteran forward has tallied 15 goals and five assists in 36 appearances in all competitions, helping the Red Devils secure a top-four finish in the Premier League with four games to spare and reach the Europa League final.
His experience and tactical prowess have fired Cavani to the top of the pecking order, with Anthony Martial falling behind. Indeed, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has waxed lyrical about his star forward’s influence both on and off the pitch, inviting him to sign a new deal.
Elsewhere, Boca Juniors were hell-bent on pairing Cavani up with Carlos Tevez at La Bombonera in what would have been a true Football Manager attacking partnership. Boca’s vice-president Juan Roman Riquelme also had a verbal agreement with the player’s father over a summer return to South America.
However, Cavani still feels he has another top-flight season in his legs and has decided to turn down the prospect of moving across the Atlantic to remain at the Theatre of Dreams beyond the summer.
After pledging his short-term future to the red jersey, the ex-Palermo marksman offered his stance on the current situation in Manchester.
“Over the season, I have developed a great affection for the club and everything that it represents,” he told the club’s official website.
“I feel a deep bond with my teammates and the staff who work behind the scenes here. They give me extra motivation every day, and I know that. Together, we can achieve special things.
“From the very first moment that I arrived, I felt the confidence of the manager. As a player, this belief gives you the perfect opportunity to play your best football, and I want to thank him for that.
“I have been touched with how much the supporters have wanted me to stay, and I will give everything to bring them happiness and joy with my performances on the field.
“I’ve not yet been able to play in front of the Old Trafford crowd, and that is something that I cannot wait to do.”
