Chelsea could reportedly make a shock move to land the outgoing Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng, reports in Germany say.
Boateng, who has spent the last ten years at Bayern Munich, could leave the Allianz Arena at the end of the season. The 32-year-old’s contract in Bavaria is running out next summer. The parties have yet to reach an agreement over a possible extension, and with the time ticking away, the experienced defender could be on his way out of the club soon. Though he has yet to commit his future to Bayern, Boateng has been a permanent fixture in Hansi Flick’s tactical set-up this season. He has made 17 appearances in the Bundesliga, aiding his side climb to the top of the tree.
Last season was a rather disappointing one for Boateng, prompting rumors about his potential departure. He also emerged as a transfer target for Chelsea this past summer, even after the Blues already sealed the deal to bring in Thiago Silva. However, Antonio Rudiger and Kurt Zouma have both proved unreliable and inconsistent this season, with Fikayo Tomori already loaned out to AC Milan. Having that said, Thomas Tuchel is already on the lookout for potential defensive reinforcement to increase the competition in his backline.
According to German publication Bild, Chelsea could make a move for Boateng if Bayern fail to extend the player’s contract before the season is over. The German centre-back has experience in the Premier League, having played for Manchester City for a year before returning to his homeland with the Bavarians in summer 2011. Boateng has clocked up 217 Bundesliga appearances during his ten-year spell at the Allianz Arena, lifting eight league titles and two Champions League crowns.
Another out-of-contract Bayern star has found himself on the radar of Chelsea. It’s David Alaba, who has refused to pledge his long-term future after being pressured by the club to put pen to paper on a new deal. In a bid for a new challenge, the 28-year-old is determined to cut ties with the perennial German champions and kick-start a new adventure abroad comes the next summer. Unfortunately for Chelsea, Real Madrid have already made notable progress in their efforts to capture Alaba’s signature, with several Premier League sides also interested in securing his services.
Though not long ago Alaba seemed destined to link up with Zinedine Zidane’s boys, recent news from Germany has suggested he might be willing to dump Real in favor of a possible switch to the Premier League. The main reason behind such a decision is, in fact, quite simple. The player believes he could get much more lucrative terms in England than the ones presented by Los Blancos. At the moment, however, Boateng appears to be a more realistic option between the two.
