Diego Costa fined for assaulting referee Jesus Gil Manzano

Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa has been handed an eight-match ban for abusing the referee during his team’s clash with Barcelona on Saturday

Referee Jesus Gil Manzano sent off the 30-year-old Spaniard in the 28th minute of La Liga encounter between the Catalans and Los Colchoneros after the player allegedly insulted his mother.

Costa’s expulsion helped Barca to secure a comfortable 2-0 triumph and probably run away with the league title.

Although former Chelsea man dismissed Manzano’s report after the match, the Spanish Football Federation remained deaf to Costa’s claims and has given him an eight-match suspension.

Additionally, the Atletico forward was fined €6,010 over the incident, while the club has to pay €2,800 unless their inevitable appeal come through.

As things stand at the moment, the Spain international won’t be able to help his teammates until the end of the season, considering there are just seven La Liga fixtures left to go.
