Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has identified four players who can take Sergio Aguero’s position in the remainder of the season
Aguero picked up a knee injury during Manchester City’s 5-0 demolition of Burnley at the Etihad last time out and is expected to undergo surgery, which means he will not be able to help his side down the final stretch of the season.
With eight Premier League matches left to go, Guardiola will have to invent a new system to cover the loss of his headline performer, with several first-team stars ready to fill the void.
Although the Spaniard has Gabriel Jesus at his disposal, a hectic schedule in the next 32 days would probably require Guardiola to rotate the Brazilian.
Known for his sensational ideas, the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss is prepared to deploy Ilkay Gundogan as a ‘false nine,’ even though the German is the most comfortable playing as a deep-lying playmaker.
Indeed, in the build-up to Manchester City’s trip to Chelsea, Guardiola has named four players who can replace Aguero during the final part of the season, with Gundogan among them.
"It doesn't look good, something in the knee"— Sky Sports News (@SkySportsNews) June 23, 2020
Pep Guardiola was unsure whether we will see Sergio Aguero again this season after he limped off against Burnley
“We don’t have any doubts about Gabriel,” Guardiola said in his pre-match press conference, as relayed by the Manchester Evening News.
“The only doubt is that not one single player can play every three days.
“Raheem [Sterling] can play in this position, even Gundogan and Bernardo [Silva]. Not like a [proper] striker, but we can use them.”
Sterling and Bernardo Silva have flourished performing as ‘false nines’ in the past, especially the former, who has established himself as one of the most lethal forwards in the Premier League during Guardiola’s tenure.
But, Pep can also count on Leroy Sane, who has returned to full fitness during the coronavirus break, even though the 24-year-old’s future in Manchester hangs in the balance.
