Pep Guardiola has provided an update on Sergio Aguero’s fitness in the build-up to Manchester City’s FA Cup trip to Swansea.
Aguero has endured an injury-wracked season so far, registering only five Premier League appearances without making any impact. The Argentine last featured for Manchester City in a 3-1 Premier League win at Chelsea on January 3, coming into the fray as the 86th-minute substitute. Aguero’s absence has affected the Sky Blues’ attacking output, with Gabriel Jesus often struggling to live up to expectations. Even though Pep Guardiola has had to readjust his game system due to his first-choice striker’s long-term injury, City have hit the purple patch of form, racking up an impressive 14-game winning streak in all competitions.
In the midst of a fine spell of form, Manchester City travel to the Liberty Stadium to take on Championship juggernauts Swansea in the FA Cup’s 5th round. Widely regarded as odds-on favorites to claim a place in the competition’s last-8, City will be confident of extending their winning run against the Wales-based outfit to seven matches across all competitions. Despite boasting a sizeable leap in quality over Swansea, runaway Premier League leaders may encounter a few difficulties on Wednesday.
First of all, the Swans are enjoying a decent spell of their own, heading into this showdown on the back of a ten-game unbeaten run (W8, D2). The one thing they can particularly be proud of is that seven of their eight victories achieved during that ten-match sequence come by a full-time margin of at least two goals.
The second noteworthy fact is that Guardiola will again have to come up with an idea on how to replace his most prolific forward. Unfortunately for Manchester City, Aguero will not be flying with his teammates to Swansea despite showing positive signs of optimizing his level of fitness. Indeed, the 32-year-old continues to struggle to regain full fitness, though he has recently returned to the training ground.
During his pre-match press conference, Guardiola explained Aguero’s current physical status but refused to make any predictions on whether the ex-Atletico Madrid star will come back to the field soon.
“Yesterday [Aguero] trained with the group for 10-15 minutes, and later he did some part alone. Day by day, he is feeling better,” said Pep [via Manchester City official Twitter account].
“Not yet [idea when he will return].”
