Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is reportedly looking to step up his efforts to land sought-after Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe next summer.
Liverpool’s all-star attacking trident, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino, have faltered badly in the recent period. Before outscoring Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 last time out, the trio had gone four Premier League matches without scoring. While waiting for long-term absentee Diogo Jota to return to action, the Reds have been struggling to pose a genuine attacking threat in the English top-flight. Indeed, Liverpool have racked up 20 Premier League goals with the Portuguese forward in their matchday squad. Meanwhile, they’ve mustered 14 in nine league matches without Jota, mainly thanks to a 7-0 thumping of Crystal Palace.
Therefore, Jurgen Klopp considers adding another high-quality piece to his star-studded attacking cast, with PSG’s Kylian Mbappe emerging as his dream signing. The Frenchman’s arrival would increase an already intimidating firepower at Anfield, though sealing the deal with Paris could be a stumbling block. Mauricio Pochettino has recently pointed out the club’s resolve to keep the 22-year-old forward in the French capital. A tally of 16 goals and nine assists in 23 competitive outings this season shows why PSG are hell-bent on tying the lightning-quick striker down to a new deal. Indeed, Mbappe currently tops the scoring charts in Ligue 1, having bagged 14 goals in 17 league appearances.
The former Monaco starlet has been the focal point of PSG’s domestic success since joining the club in a blockbuster €180million deal back in summer 2017. Despite Mbappe’s godlike status in Paris, Klopp is reportedly confident of snatching him away from Ligue 1 in the summer. According to Canal+, the German manager has already tasted waters by holding a round of talks with the player’s entourage. The prospect of playing in the most exciting football league on the planet could be too tempting to resist for Mbappe if the opportunity presents itself.
Klopp seems willing to use Mbappe’s message of appreciation for Liverpool as a trump card in the possible negotiations with PSG. The France international’s proclaimed affection for the Merseyside outfit could also make all the difference in a potential transfer tug-of-war between the Reds and Real Madrid. Mbappe’s name features Los Blancos’ shopping list close to the top, as Florentino Perez looks to bring another household name to Santiago Bernabeu.
Real have lost ground on La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid early in the season and are facing a potentially trophyless campaign after suffering a shocking Copa del Rey elimination to lower-league side Alcoyano. Having that said, the reigning Spanish champions are desperate to restore the glory days by employing one of the most highly-rated players in Europe. Mbappe gives the impression of being the only reliable long-term replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, who joined Juventus in the summer of 2018.
