Kalidou Koulibaly has his heart set on a move to Manchester City as Napoli look to offload the captain to raise funds for summer spending campaign
Manchester City and Manchester United have both been heavily linked with a big-money move for Koulibaly, who has established himself as one of the best defenders in Europe’s top-five leagues.
Both Premier League giants are looking to shore up their defensive woes in the summer transfer window, and the Senegalese’s profile perfectly fits the bill.
Although both Manchester clubs would like to see the 29-year-old centre-back in their ranks, Koulibaly’s hefty £90million price tag has so far been throwing a spanner in the works.
However, Napoli’s hot pursuit of the Lille prodigy Gabriel Magalhaes has seen president Aurelio De Laurentiis soften his stance on his captain’s price.
Coppa Italia winners are battling Arsenal for the super-talented Brazilian and are in need for cash to beat the Londoners to the youngster’s signature.
According to the Daily Star, the ‘Partenopei’ are now willing to discuss Koulibaly’s sale on the basis of £60m, with the player reportedly angling for a move to the Etihad.
Pep Guardiola is a long-term admirer of Koulibaly, who he sees as a notable upgrade to the current central defenders.
Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones have both proved unreliable, which saw Manchester City already snap up Nathan Ake from Bournemouth.
But, with Stones increasingly heading towards the Etihad exit, Guardiola is hopeful of landing a top-class central defender to boost City’s chances of challenging Liverpool for the Premier League title next term.
Otamendi could also be shown the door following another underwhelming season, with the Argentinean’s former employers Valencia looking for a reunion.
Koulibaly’s physical presence, tactical awareness, and aerial strength have made him one of the best players in his position in Europe.
Since joining from Genk in 2014, the highly-rated defender has racked up almost 250 appearances for the Serie A side.
