Lampard set sights on Manchester City outcast

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has identified Manchester City’s John Stones as a solution for his team’s defensive woes

Chelsea conceded more goals than any other Premier League side that finished in the upper half of the table in 2019/20, putting Lampard on red alert.

With David Luiz, Antonio Rudiger, and Kurt Zouma all proved unreliable and inconsistent, the English manager is keen to add to his defensive options this summer.

The Blues have already snapped up the likes of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech and are on the verge of taking Kai Havertz away from Bayer Leverkusen.

Indeed, it’s only a matter of time before the German wonder becomes a part of Lampard’s well-structured jigsaw.

According to the Express Sport, Manchester City’s John Stones is the next name on Lampard’s summer wishlist.

After falling down the pecking order at the Etihad, the 26-year-old centre-back is keen to move on in search of regular first-team action.

Stones has never managed to settle at Manchester City following his £47million arrival from Everton in 2016.

Four years and numerous injury setbacks after, the English defender has been deemed surplus to requirements and placed on the transfer market.

In fact, Stones’ price tag has taken a notable downward curve as Lampard hopes to strike a deal with City for no more than £20million.

Pep Guardiola already landed the highly-rated Dutchman Nathan Ake from Bournemouth earlier this month and is now moving on to his next target, Kalidou Koulibaly.

If Manchester City complete the Senegalese’s transfer, Stones would see his first-team opportunities reduced to a minimum.

That’s the kind of scenario Lampard is looking to benefit from and snatch the central defender from City’s clutches.
