Lautaro Martinez has outlined Inter Milan’s goals in Serie A this season after scoring his first hat-trick for the Italian powerhouse.
Lautaro Martinez was an absolute protagonist of the first Serie A matchday in the new calendar year. Inspired by the likes of Lautaro and Romelu Lukaku, Inter Milan brushed aside relegation-threatened Crotone 6-2 in the opening Serie A match of 2021. It was the Argentine’s first treble in the Nerazzurri shirt in what was a delightful afternoon for Antonio Conte’s side.
It did not start well for Inter, as the visitors grabbed an early lead through Niccolo Zanellato’s header. However, the hosts bounced back only eight minutes after conceding the opener, as Lukaku set up his partner in crime to level the score. Though the Milanese giants completed the turnaround just after the half-hour mark, the teams went into half-time on level terms as Vladimir Golemic made no mistake from the spot.
In the second half, it was all Inter. Crotone’s wheels completely fell off after the break, with Martinez chipping the ball over Alex Cordaz to restore the home side’s lead in the 57th minute. It took Inter only seven minutes to double their advantage after Lukaku wrestled his way past Sebastiano Luperto and showed composure while one-on-one with the keeper. The 78th minute was a historical one for Martinez, who headed home a rebound to complete his first hat-trick for the Lombard outfit and put the game to bed.
Conte’s men refused to stop and saw their efforts rewarded in the dying moments of the match, with Achraf Hakimi scoring his fifth goal of the season. As a result, Inter briefly managed to move to the summit, though AC Milan regained the top spot thanks to a hard-fought 2-0 victory away to Benevento. Nonetheless, Sunday’s performance has been by far Inter’s most convincing this term.

During the post-match interview, Martinez has hailed Inter’s desire to win, refusing to hide his excitement for notching up a perfect hat-trick.
“We faced a well-trained team, we’ve been working a lot on the defensive phase, and we are very happy for today’s win,” he told Football-Italia.
“I missed this feeling, it’s nice to score goals, but it is also important to work for the team. I dedicate these goals to my family, my girlfriend Augustina, and our daughter, who will be born soon,” Martinez added.
“I am happy when Inter win. But I am even happier when we win thanks to my goals.”
Lautaro has also outlined his team’s goals for the remainder of the season.
“The Serie A title is one of our targets. We are working to stay up there. We hope we’ll be in first place until next week.”
The Nerazzurri have now won eight consecutive Serie A matches and are only one point adrift of city rivals. For the first time in ten years, the Milanese heavyweights are going head-to-head for the league crown, leaving reigning champions Juventus 13 and 12 points behind, respectively.
