Inter Milan concluded their participation in this year’s Europa League edition after suffering a narrow 1-0 home loss to Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday
The Nerazzurri have entered this fixture carrying a goalless draw from the Commerzbank-Arena, but Luka Jovic’s superb lob in the 6th minute was enough to propel the Eagles to the quarter-finals.
It was Inter’s second defeat in their last five outings across all competitions, as Luciano Spalletti’s men face another crisis.
During the post-match interview, the Italian tactician has admitted his side lacked attitude to come on top of this round-of-16 tie.
“We weren’t good today. We really lacked everything today, and we lost our balance right from the get-go.”
Luciano Spalletti complained #Inter “lost balance immediately and made naïve mistakes” to allow an early Eintracht Frankfurt goal that effectively ended the tie https://t.co/2syVxmmIKB #InterEintracht #InterSGE #UEL #FCIM pic.twitter.com/OpgVhefFUT— footballitalia (@footballitalia) March 14, 2019
“Once they scored, things got way more complicated for us. We couldn’t hold on to possession today, so that’s never a good sign.”
It is fair to say Spalletti didn’t have his entire starting lineup ready, which forced him to opt for some youngsters that so far didn’t have the chance to perform at the senior level.
“Youngsters? Well, we didn’t have many options, so we had to use some of the kids. We wanted to win, and the expectations are high, but we failed tonight.”
Spalletti and his men now have to focus on Derby della Madonnina as they take on arch-rivals AC Milan on Sunday.
