According to The Daily Star, Manchester United could sign Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin in January after Jose Mourinho put pressure on the board to reinforce the backline.
The Portuguese manager has been trying to land a world-class defender during the summer transfer session, but his efforts to sign Toby Alderweireld and Harry Maguire have come a cropper.
Having been left with Lindelof, Smalling, Jones, and Bailly, the ex-Real Madrid boss is desperate to secure the services of a high-profile centre-back in the upcoming transfer window.
Now, the British outlet have stated that the Red Devils are looking to take advantage of Godin’s current situation at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano to clinch the deal in the winter.

The 32-year-old Uruguayan will be a free agent once his contract with Los Colchoneros runs out next summer. Furthermore, according to the clause in his current deal, Godin can start Madrid if someone table a £20 million offer.
Given the fact, the parties are yet to find an agreement over a contract extension the former Villarreal man could leave the Spanish capital next winter.
Additionally, the same source states that Godin is ‘keen’ on completing a switch to the Premier League after playing in La Liga for 11 years.
Meanwhile, the EPL heavyweights are willing to bet huge on the experienced defender in spite of his age, as Mourinho has a long-standing interest in the player.
