Manchester United ready to spend world-record fee for top defensive target

Manchester United will reportedly match Leicester City’s stratospheric demand for Harry Maguire this summer, as Ed Woodward looks to help the team rise following an underwhelming season

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer oversaw frustratingly poor United’s defensive displays following his arrival back in December 2018, witnessing his side conceding 54 goals in the Premier League last term.

As a result, the Norwegian is preparing a summer clearout of his team’s backline, with Marcos Rojo and Eric Baily expected to be among the headline departures.

In the meantime, the three-time Champions League winners are exploring various options to strengthen the weakest part of the team, with several names emerging as potential solutions.

After being warned off by Napoli over Kalidou Koulibaly, the Red Devils have switched their attention towards the Foxes’ talisman.

Maguire has been United’s long-held dream ever since Jose Mourinho’s desperate attempts to hire a high-profile centre-back.

The 26-year-old rearguard is now Manchester United’s top target for the upcoming transfer session, although they will have to beat fierce competition from the local rivals Manchester City.

In order to acquire Maguire’s services, Ed Woodward is reportedly ready to meet Leicester’s £80m asking price for the England international.

If the deal materializes in the forthcoming period, it will see United breaking Liverpool’s world-record fee for the at-the-time Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk.
