Messi’s father throws son’s future into further doubt

Lionel Messi’s father-agent Jorge has thrown his son’s future into a corridor of uncertainty ahead of the upcoming meeting with the Barcelona management

Messi has been heavily linked with a summer departure from Barcelona ever since the Camp Nou outfit suffered an embarrassing 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals.

After overseeing his side also hand over the La Liga title to arch-rivals Real Madrid, the 33-year-old Argentinean seems to have grown tired of his life in Catalonia.

Desperate to leave Spain as soon as possible, the six-time Ballon d’Or winner has informed his attorneys about triggering a clause in his contract that allows him to go away for free before the 2020-21 season.

However, the Calatan giants are hell-bent on keeping their headline performer beyond the summer.

As such, they’ve already disputed Messi’s claim, stating that the clause ran out on June 10.

Indeed, Barcelona are insisting on a €700million release clause, which makes it almost impossible for the interested parties to get a deal over the line.

Despite Inter Milan’s long-standing interest, Manchester City are the front-runners in the race to take Messi away from the Iberian peninsula.

Asked to provide an update on his son’s future in the build-up to the meeting with Barca directors, Messi’s father and agent, Jorge, said: “I don’t know, I know nothing.”

But, he also confirmed that there was no discussion with Pep Guardiola over a potential reunion at Manchester City.

“I don’t know, there’s nothing yet,” he said, as relayed by the Evening Standard.

Messi skipped Monday’s training session, which was the first under the new boss Ronald Koeman.

He also didn’t show up for the Barcelona testing last weekend, sending a clear message to the club about his future plans.
