Napoli and Ajax go head-to-head for Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen

Ajax are reportedly ready to battle Napoli in a tug-of-war for the outgoing Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen

Vertonghen’s contract is due to expire next summer, but Ajax and Napoli are both looking to convince Tottenham to sell their star defender already in January.

The Belgium international, who seems reluctant to extend his deal with the Premier Lague outfit, can negotiate personal terms with foreign clubs this winter.

With Christian Eriksen also heading towards exit doors, Spurs might not be willing to miss out on the opportunity to cash in on Vertonghen, who has a host of admirers outside the Premier League.

According to the Daily Mail, Napoli have rekindled their interest in the 32-year-old, but they will face stiff competition from the defender’s former club Ajax.

Gennaro Gattuso has identified his backline as the weakest link in a solid squad and intends to fix Napoli’s defensive problems in January by acquiring a top-class centre-back such as Vertonghen.

The Serie A heavyweights tried to persuade Tottenham to sell their valuable asset last summer, but their attempts have come a cropper due to the player’s indispensability in north London.

However, Napoli will have to beat Ajax to bolster their defense, as Daley Blind has recently been diagnosed with a heart condition, which has forced the Lancers to step up their interest in their former employee.

Both sides are hopeful to land Vertonghen this winter rather than wait for his contract to run out in the summer and will be looking to lure Tottenham to renounce his services in January.

The left-footed central defender has spent seven years on Spurs’ books, gobbling 302 appearances and establishing himself as one of the most highly respected centre-backs in Europe.
