The Brazilian legend Pele has named his preference between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi
Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi are the best and most consistent players of the 21st century beyond any doubt, but the opinions about who of the two is better are extremely divided.
The Juventus goal-machine and the Barcelona wizard are the two most polarizing figures in football, depending on which side of the spectrum of liking one or the other do people fall on.
Widely considered as the greatest rivals in football history, the arch-nemesis share 11 Ballon d’Or awards between them as well as numerous records on the club and international level.
Although many still regard him as the greatest-ever player to grace the game, Pele’s place at the top of the list has been compromised by the abovementioned duo.
Although Messi currently leads the Ballon d’Or chart, the former Brazil international prefers Cristiano Ronaldo over his arch-rival.
“Today, the best player in the world is Cristiano Ronaldo,” Pele said, as reported by the Daily Mail.
“I think he’s the best because he’s more consistent, but you can’t forget about [Lionel] Messi, of course, but he’s not a striker.”
Ronaldo’s decision to leave Real Madrid for Juventus in summer 2018 has officially ended his on-field rivalry with the Barca captain.
Yet, the never-ending debate surrounding the two stars will be present long after they hang their boots.
Ronaldo’s pinnacle at the Bernabeu overlapped with Messi’s peak at the Camp Nou, which gave a whole new dimension to their rivalry, separating them from all other famous football rivalries.
