Former Netherlands international Rafael Van der Vaart has slammed Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, calling him a ‘Sunday League player’
The Red Devils shattered a world-record fee for a defender when they splashed out £80m to lure the 26-year-old away from Leicester City during the summer.
Although the England international played every minute of United’s top-flight action this season, undoubtedly adding a new dimension to their sloppy backline, Van der Vaart believes his qualities are nowhere near the transfer fee Manchester United paid to bring him on board.
“When I watch an amateur game on Sunday, I find three players playing like him. I’m serious,” Van der Vaart said on Ziggo Sport, as transcribed by The Independent.
“It may sound silly, but he will not hear it anyway. After all, we’re talking about a €90 million transfer here. Then [Virgil] van Dijk is worth €300 million.”

Before making a switch to Old Trafford, Maguire has featured for England in the UEFA Nations League final against the Netherlands, with his display prompting harsh criticism from the ex-Tottenham Hotspur man.
“It’s funny because, during the Nations League, I was doing work for Dutch television,” he recently told Sky Sports.
“And I remember we were saying ‘Harry Maguire was by far the worst player on the pitch.’
“And then two months later, £80-£90m? Unbelievable.”
the English use their football league to launder money. seriously, the sums are staggering in comparison to the talent.
