Real Sociedad squeezed past Real Madrid in a thrilling Copa del Rey quarter-final encounter at the Santiago Bernabeu
Real Madrid suffered their first home defeat of the season, as Real Sociedad won 4-3 on Thursday evening to progress to the cup semi-finals.
Although the home side enjoyed much of the possession (65%), they struggled to create many clear-cut opportunities from it, often finding themselves short of men at the back during Sociedad’s quick counter-attacks.
Indeed, Real Madrid loanee Marting Odegaard opened the scoring in the 22nd minute to help the visitors take a 1-0 lead into halftime, although Alexander Isak wasted two chances to increase the gap before the break.

However, the 20-year-old Swedish forward turned into Sociedad’s hero in the second half, notching a quick-fire brace to make it 3-0 for the traveling side before Marcelo reduced it to 3-1 right before the hour mark.
Only a moment before being replaced by the manager, Isak provided a delightful low cross to Mikel Merino, who restored a three-goal lead for Sociedad, giving the hosts a mountain to climb in the final 20 minutes of play.
Still, Los Blancos refused to give up and instead brought a late drama to the Bernabeu through the likes of Rodrygo and Nacho, with the whole stadium wheeling Zinedine Zidane’s men to an equalizer.
Unfortunately for the Frenchman, his players’ efforts ultimately proved insufficient to take the game into extra-time, even though the referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz blew the final whistle after the 97th minute.
