Athletic Bilbao game shows Real Madrid need new striker

Real Madrid dropped precious two points at the Bernabeu, as the stubborn Athletic Bilbao side held Los Blancos in a frustrating night for Karim Benzema

Another disappointing evening for the crowd at the Bernabeu saw the Madrid giants play out a dismal goalless draw with Los Leones.

The Basque visitors surrendered the ball to the home team and barely managed to create chances in front of Thibaut Courtois’ goal, although Kenan Kodro saw his late first-half goals disallowed for offside.

Real Madrid dominated the game in all aspects, but lack of clinical finishing ultimately witnessed Athletic walk away from the Spanish capital with a point.

Benzema missed a few clear-cut opportunities to put Real on the front foot, as Unai Simon denied all four of his shots on target.

Moreover, Zinedine Zidane’s men hit the woodwork on three occasions, with two of his substitutes, Luka Jovic and Nacho, seeing their headers rejected by the frame.

It was Real’s third successive La Liga stalemate following back-to-back away draws with Valencia and Barcelona.

As a result, Barcelona are now two points clear at the summit thanks to Saturday’s 4-1 hammering of Deportivo Alaves.
