Raheem Sterling has reached a 100-goal milestone for Manchester City after scoring against Real Madrid on Friday night
Manchester City secured a 2-1 victory at the Etihad in the return leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie versus Real Madrid to reach the competition’s quarter-finals.
Raheem Sterling broke the deadlock nine minutes into the game after Raphael Varane made a horrible mistake in his own box, allowing Gabriel Jesus to dispossess him of the ball and assist the 25-year-old for a tap-in.
It was Sterling’s 100th goal for the Sky Blues and his 31st goal this season in all competitions, as he enjoys the most prolific campaign at City.
Although Karim Benzema put things back to square one in the 28th minute after a delightful assist from Rodrygo, Varane’s second blunder of the match sealed Manchester City’s qualification.
Indeed, Gabriel Jesus intercepted the French defender’s attempt to pass the ball back to his goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and restored City’s lead in the 68th minute.
Manchester City will take on Lyon in the revamped Champions League quarter-finals.
Despite losing 2-1 at the Allianz Stadium, the Ligue 1 side dumped Juventus out of the competition on the away goal rule after winning the first leg 1-0 at home.
