Suarez gloats about his Atletico Madrid form

Atletico Madrid forward Luis Suarez has refused to hide his delight for proving naysayers wrong in a truly remarkable fashion.

Barcelona deemed Suarez surplus to requirements only last summer, opting not to renew the Uruguayan’s contract despite his tremendous influence on the team in the previous seasons. The 34-year-old striker was an omnipresent figure at Camp Nou for six long years, lifting numerous major trophies, including a UEFA Champions League crown and four La Liga titles. However, that didn’t stop Barcelona from offloading him to Atletico Madrid back in the summer in a disrespectfully low transfer worth just €6million.

Given his age, many had expected Suarez to play a minor role in this La Liga campaign. Instead, the former Liverpool marksman has turned out to be a season-changer for Atletico, the ultimate ingredient Diego Simeone’s side lacked in their title chase over the past few years. With Suarez in the mixture, Los Colchoneros have gained a whole new dimension in the attacking third, looking more dangerous than ever. The player himself sits at the top of the scoring charts in La Liga, having accrued a whopping 16 goals in 18 top-flight appearances thus far.

Though there’s still a lot to play for this season, Simeone’s team seem to be running away with the league title already. Atleti hold a six-point lead over cross-town rivals Real Madrid and have a game in hand on Zinedine Zidane’s side. Much of the credit for the extraordinary league campaign has to be pinned on Suarez, who has tipped the scales in Atleti’s favor on various occasions this term.

Suarez’s sublime form in the Spanish capital comes as a big slap in the face for Barca, and he has not missed the chance to rub their noses in it.

“I still feel like I’m enjoying this moment that I’m in today, in football’s elite,” Suarez told ESPN.

“Being at Atletico, you’re in football’s elite. Some people didn’t believe that I could still be at this level. I’ve got the same enthusiasm.

“I hope that this year, next year, and for however many years it is, I keep competing and giving my best until you realize that you’ve gone as far as you can.

“But no one will get rid of me. I’ll decide when I go.”
