Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has dropped a major hint on the Manchester United captaincy after naming Paul Pogba as a potential candidate for the captain’s armband
The French midfielder has already announced his desire to leave Old Trafford this summer, with Real Madrid looking to take advantage of the player’s will to lure him to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
Pogba already captained the Red Devils on multiple occasions last season but has eventually been stripped of the club’s captaincy by the former manager Jose Mourinho.
However, after Antonio Valencia left United to join the Ecuadorian outfit LDU Quito earlier this month, Solskjaer needs to appoint a new skipper, and he has already assembled a list of potential contenders that also includes the 26-year-old Frenchman.
Asked if Pogba is on his list, the Norwegian boss replied: “Yep. We’ve got quite a few possibilities there, and when the season starts, we’ll announce it.”
“Of course, we’ll have a good assessment, see how pre-season goes. But, as you saw, Ashley Young will wear it when he’s playing until we decide on someone, yeah.”
Entrusting Pogba with the captain’s armband may be Solskjaer’s last-ditch effort to tie the former Juventus man down to the Theatre of Dreams.
The highly-rated playmaker came off the bench against Perth Glory on Sunday to provide an assist for Marcus Rashford in United’s 2-0 victory in their opening pre-season match.
